"Dude," says Chad, following his line of sight, "You have, like, anti-experience. You doing karaoke sounds like someone murdering a cat."
"Shut up," Jared says absently, barely paying attention to his best friend. There's something about the sign--a good feeling about the handwriting, the firm strokes, thick lines, and something more, just a deep curiosity about what a Glee Club is--that makes it hard to turn away.
"It's the same time as football," Chad points out.
"Football's all the time."
"Exactly. You're booked, fucker."
"I know," Jared says, but he doesn't forget.

The Glee Club's informational meeting is on Thursday, and Jared tells coach he'll be late to practice. He's just--he needs something other than football for his college applications. He needs to be better rounded.
"Hi, welcome to Glee Club," says a perky blonde girl with huge glasses. "Come on in!"
"Uh," says Jared. "Hi."
"Hi," says someone else, and Jared turns and--oh, cute guy from calculus. "Jared, right?"
"Hi!" says Jared, with more enthusiasm. "Jared, yeah! Jensen?"
"You're interested in Glee Club?"
"Yeah!" says Jared, with more conviction than he feels. He is, just--he wants Jensen to think he's really interested, and talk to him a lot more.
"Any singing experience?" asks Jensen.
"Uh--not professionally? I mean, everyone sings, right? Sometimes."
Jensen raises his eyebrows, like Jared is some sort of particularly stupid fish. Or something.
"I was thinking musicals or something," says Jensen.
"Oh. No. Just--Happy Birthday and stuff."
"Right," says Jensen. "Well, um, have a seat."
"My best friend says I sound like I'm murdering a cat when I sing," Jared blurts out.
Jensen blinks at him. "Okay."
"But I really like it."
Jensen stares at him for a long minute, and then gives him one of those smiles Jared has seen once or twice in class, the ones that make his heart stop. "Hey," says Jensen, quiet and encouraging, "It's a start."
