In general, I don't like doing very long author notes, because I think stories should speak for themselves.

That being said, sometimes a story needs a long author note.

The thing is, the fic in this post is not really a J2 AU. It's Jared and Jensen in an AU setting, but it is actually a fanfic for Lois Lowry's The Giver. The story presupposes knowledge of The Giver, and after a lot of debating with myself, I decided to not include a primer for those who haven't read it. I'm not saying it's impossible to follow if you haven't read the book (I really have no idea), but you're honestly not my target audience.

I almost did not post this fic, because it feels nearly blasphemous to me to make this book, which was hugely important to my childhood, into just another J2 AU. Which is why I want to stress--that's not what I was trying to do. Whether or not it is what I did, well, god knows authorial intent means very little. But my intention was for this to be as much about the world of The Giver as it is about Jared and Jensen's relationship.

tl;dr: this may not be fic for you, either because you have not read The Giver, or because you have and this is not something you're interested in. And that's fine. This is pretty much a fic for me, and I enjoyed writing it. If it is a fic for you, I hope you enjoy reading it.

DOWN TO BUSINESS: The summary and the fic itself both contain MAJOR SPOILERS for the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry. As such, the summary is included under the cut. o/!

Title: since feeling is first
Author: poor_choices
Fandom: The Giver/Supernatural RPS
Pairing: Jared Padalecki/Jensen Ackles
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Highlight for spoilers: ambiguous ending
Word Count: 12000 words.
Summary: After the new Receiver is lost, Jared starts to experience other people's memories, and to realize who he really is.
Disclaimer: With, in all honesty, the utmost respect to Lois Lowry. And Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, natch.

I haven't read this yet, but I'm really excited to, and I really appreciate what you were trying to do :). I always wanted more of this story, and in an adult context, so I'm really excited to see what you've done! Thanks for sharing this.

I have followed your stories for a long time, and it is actually because of them that I started to read any j2 - I haven't read this fic, but I just wanted to mention that I was SO happy to see it. Even at 21 I still count "the Giver" as one of my top favourite novels ever, and I don't think that you could wreck it for anyone by exploring your enjoyment of the universe it showed us in this way. It makes me so happy to see something I have loved my whole life from my childhood interact with something I quite enjoy now! And you are an excellent writer, so I have no doubt that your exploration and blending of the j2 characters and the universe will be fascinating. :)

I look forward to the read and will comment again!

Oh god, I love The Giver. As in "I love dystopian fiction that kinda hurts to read." I will read this tonight, and be back with some kind of useful feedback tomorrow, but I wanted to stop by and tell you how excited I am to see fic in that 'verse written by an author I admire.

I am ridiculously excited to read this. I had to read The Giver twice for school and it's one of a VERY small selection of the 'mandated' books we had to read that stuck with me until even now. I can't wait to see how you've done it. :)

i finally had time to read this. The Giver is one of my all time favorite books, and I read it with my students every year. I make them write the next chapter after the end. I've read a million of them, but never have I seen anything as beautiful as this. It made me cry.

This was great. I love The Giver, and this did a good job of picking up after the end of the book, but giving it a more adult perspective. I really love all your fic - haven't commented before I don't think, but I am always excited to come across something by you that I haven't read before!
